How to Save at Walmart – Step by Step

Hello friends!

Let’s talk Walmart.

We all know that Walmart usually has the lowest prices in town. But do you know there are ways you can save even more? Let’s walk through shopping at Walmart step by step and I’ll share some things you can do at each step to help you save more.

How to Save at Walmart – Before Shopping

Make a list

….. and stick to it! Have you ever gone to the store to buy 1 or 2 things and come out with a cart full of things you didn’t really need? Yeah, me too. One of the best ways to save at Walmart, or any store, is to make a list and stick to it. Browse the Walmart ad to see what’s on rollback and also check ads for other local stores. Make note of anything on your list that’s on sale at another store. (You’ll need this later for price matching.) Flipp and Retale are two apps I like to use for browsing weekly ads.

Consider ordering online

Before you go to the store, jump online and check out See if free grocery pick-up is available in your area. Not shopping for groceries? Most items on Walmart’s website will ship free to your local store. It may save you money and time if you can just order what you need online and pick up in-store. If you’re spending at least $50.00 you can have your order shipped free to your home.

If you do order online, shop through Ebates to save even more.

How to Save at Walmart – While Shopping

Shop early

If you are shopping for meat or produce, consider hitting the store early. In the morning stores will often mark down foods that are close to their sell by dates. You can also check the bakery for discounted day old baked goods.

While you’re shopping keep your eyes open for clearance items. They can be found throughout the store and most Walmart’s will have a dedicated clearance aisle. Sometimes you might get lucky and find a clearance cart at the front of the store with an extra 50% off the clearance price.

$4.00 Prescriptions

Walmart has several medications that you can get for $4.00 for a month supply or $10.00 for a 3 month supply. If you don’t already use Walmart’s pharmacy you can check out the list of $4.00 medications and see if it would save you money to transfer your prescription.

Price Match

Remember when you took some time before shopping to browse your local sales ads? Now is when you’ll put that information to use. Walmart will price match any advertised price from a local competitor’s ad. You can also price match prices for in-store purchases.

Read Walmart’s Price Match Policy

Walmart is a great place to use coupons because they allow overage. If you buy something that costs less than the amount of the coupon they will apply the overage to the rest of the items in your transaction. If you don’t have enough left in your order they will give you cash for the overage.

Consider Walmart’s Credit Card

When you are approved for a Walmart credit card, you’ll save 10% on purchases up to $250.00 that day. After that you will save 2% on gas at Walmart and 1% on all other purchases at Walmart and anywhere your card is accepted. Your Walmart credit card will also qualify you for special financing on big ticket items. (NOTE: I only recommend getting this or any credit card if you know you are responsible with credit card spending and will be able to pay your balance in full each month.)

  2. Scan your receipt.
  3. Savings Catcher will scan advertised prices in your area.

Cashback Apps

My favorite cashback apps to use at Walmart are:

  • Ibotta – they have a ton of product specific offers that you can redeem at Walmart
  • Checkout 51 – they usually have several product specific offers and sometimes bonus offers that are only redeemable at Walmart
  • SavingStar – I like their one or many offers because you can choose to buy all the products at once or just a few at a time in different shopping trips
  • Find&Save – this is an app you want to check every time you shop at Walmart because you can often find an offer for cashback on your entire purchase
